Connect Sanke U coupler (Guinness / nitro) to 5/16" barb (gas)
How to join type U, UEC / Guinness and 5/16" hose barb, and what stops it leaking.
Not a direct fit. Joining Sanke U coupler (Guinness / nitro) to 5/16" barb (gas) needs a beer-gas (nitrogen mix) source, not straight CO2.
The two ends
- End A
- Sanke U coupler (Guinness / nitro) (type U, UEC / Guinness)
- End B
- 5/16" barb (gas) (5/16" hose barb)
- A seals on
- flat washer on each threaded port
- B seals on
- barb ridges plus a worm clamp on the hose
- Part needed
- beer-gas (nitrogen mix) source, not straight CO2
The part to buy
A Sanke U coupler taps Guinness-style nitro kegs and its gas side is meant to run on beer-gas, a nitrogen and CO2 mix, not pure CO2. The 5/16 gas barb connects the same way, but the source behind it must be a beer-gas cylinder and a suitable regulator.
Running straight CO2 into a nitro keg over-carbonates it and ruins the pour. The physical connection looks identical to a CO2 setup, so the mistake is easy; the fix is the gas source and regulator, not the fitting.
