A shank is 7/8-14 on both ends, so the faucet coupling nut goes on the front and the beer nut and tailpiece on the back. The bore size, often 3/16 or 1/4 inch, sets pour resistance, and the length is chosen to match the wall it passes through. It seals on washers and nut faces, never on tape.
Flare fittings seal on the 45 degree flare face and must never be taped. Push-in fittings seal on an O-ring against the tube wall and need the tube cut square. Barbs seal under a worm clamp. Getting the sealing method right matters more than the thread label, because most homebrew leaks are a taped flare or an unclamped barb.
