Why does my new Corny post poppet not fit?

Cornelius keg posts come in two nearly identical thread sizes, 19/32-18 and 9/16-18, and mixing them is a classic homebrew mistake.

Posts unscrew, and that is the risk

Every Cornelius post threads into the keg body so it can be removed for cleaning and to replace the poppet and O-ring inside. The trouble is that different keg makers used different post threads, and two of them look the same to the eye.

The two you meet are 19/32-18 and 9/16-18. The 18 is the thread pitch and it is shared, so both feel like they might start, but the major diameters differ by a whisker and the wrong one will cross-thread or sit loose.

Why the poppet matters too

Inside each post sits a poppet, a little spring-loaded valve that closes when the disconnect comes off. Poppets are not all the same shape, and a poppet meant for one post can leak or stick in another. This is why a fresh poppet sometimes fails to seal a post that looked fine.

The fix most builders use is a universal or JG (John Guest style) poppet, designed to work across the common post variants so you do not have to identify the exact original.

How to identify what you have

If you can, measure the thread with a caliper across the crests, and compare against 19/32 (roughly the larger) versus 9/16. If you have no caliper, buy the post or poppet as a matched set for your keg brand rather than guessing, because the two sizes will happily start turning before they bind.

Keep gas and liquid posts sorted, because on a ball-lock keg they also differ in diameter, and the gas post carries identifying notches.

Ordering spares

When you order replacement posts, state the keg style (ball-lock or pin-lock) and, if known, the thread. When in doubt, universal poppets and O-ring kits cover most kegs and save a second order. A correctly seated post should thread home smoothly and hand-tighten without force.
