American Amber Ale
A malt-balanced amber ale with caramel malt depth and moderate American hop character.
About the American Amber Ale style
The American amber ale grew out of the West Coast pale-ale tradition, dialling up the crystal malt for more caramel depth and colour while keeping a solid American hop presence.
It sits in a middle ground, more malt-driven than a pale ale but still clearly hoppy, which makes it a versatile, food-friendly everyday beer and a common homebrew recipe.
Grain, hops and yeast
Malt and grain: Pale malt with a generous amount of crystal malt for caramel flavour and an amber to reddish colour.
Hop character: Moderate American hops, balanced against the caramel malt rather than dominating it.
Yeast and fermentation: A clean American ale yeast, keeping the malt and hop in balance.
A typical American Amber Ale runs 4.5 to 6.2% alcohol by volume, with a bitterness of about 25 to 40 IBU and a colour of 10 to 17 SRM. It is traditionally served in a shaker pint. These figures describe the usual range for the style; a given example may sit a little outside them.
Serving and carbonation
Serve an American amber ale cool, around 7 to 10 degrees Celsius, with a moderate carbonation. Its balance of caramel malt and American hop is at its best served fresh, like any hop-forward beer.
Fermentation in brief
A clean American ale yeast fermented in the high teens Celsius keeps the caramel malt and American hop in balance. A medium finish preserves the caramel character, so do not overattenuate; the goal is balance rather than a bone-dry beer.
Classic examples
Well-known commercial examples of the style include Bell's Amber Ale, Tröegs Nugget Nectar and Full Sail Amber. Tasting a benchmark example is the best way to understand what a style should be before brewing your own.
